TOWN HALL MEETINGS
TORONTO -- 9 JANUARY 2002

This page contains correspondence from Joan Beckley, relating to the Town Hall Meeting held in Toronto. Joan attended the evening session of these meetings.

I attended the Town Hall meeting last night in Toronto. The speakers were: Brian Gilchrist, Ken Bird (for the OGS), Kathie Orr, Louise St. Denis, and Allen Currie. Each speaker took a slightly different tack, and all made our point with grace, and sometimes with wit. They all did an excellent job, in my opinion. I didn't attend the afternoon session, but I was told it also went well.

One fellow asked from the floor if, in the previous sessions, there had been ANYONE favouring the "non-release" point of view. The moderator acknowledged that there had been only a couple. Certainly our session was totally pro-release.

The moderator said he will have a summary of our Toronto sessions on the Environics website by Friday. I will be checking to see that his recollection of the proceedings is close to mine!

Personally, I resent very much the fact that we even have to go through this process. Why won't the government take "yes" for an answer? I have sent in petitions, twice emailed my MP (John Godfrey - Don Valley West) who says he favours release but isn't pushing Mr Tobin very hard as far as I can see. Why should we have to do this? I told Godfrey "that if legislation never got changed women still wouldn't have the vote. Get on with it!" I wish he would.

A big thank you to you two for your persistence in this cause. There are lots of us out here supporting you that you probably don't even know about.

Cheers Joan Beckley
