This page contains correspondence from Don Bent, relating to the Town Hall Meeting held in Halifax. Don attended the afternoon session of these meetings. From: Don Bent To: Gordon A. Watts Sent: Tuesday, January 08, 2002 8:21 PM Subject: Halifax meeting Hi Gordon, I attended the afternoon session in Halifax and I agree with what you've been told about the first two presenters (1) Darcy Fordy and (2) Dennis Pikey, were government "ringers". I didn't catch what dept. or branch in government they worked. Both were of the opinion that nothing should "ever" be released. The third speaker was Michael Colburne, he spoke on behalf of the N.S. libraries. Mr. Colburne noted that more and more of the library business is directly related to genealogy and that people plan their vacation period around researching in the Nova Scotia area, which adds a big boost for tourism. Because these three presenters finished early and as Dr. Jim Taylor wasn't there yet (he was due to speak at 3:35) Chris Baker(chair) asked if anyone else would like to speak. Three ladies in the audience each took a turn at the mike, they all agreed that the census must be released and that the 92 year time frame was sufficient, and confidentiality wasn't an issue. Chris asked each speaker what they thought about the 3rd. option, all rejected the plan except for the 2 "ringers" they were for it. Dr. Jim Taylor came out strong in favour of release of the census stating that it isn't something new to the government and that they've been releasing census for years. The information was collected by Canadians, for Canadians and should be returned to Canadians. He had many more good points but I can't remember them all now. There was about 20-25 people in attendance. I asked if I could get a transcription and Mr. Baker said he would be putting a summary on the web site by Wed. I have a couple more petitions almost filled in I'll send them along soon. Catch you later. Don Bent |
