08/20/2002 - email from MP Myron Thompson to Steve C.
To: Steve C. Sent: Tuesday, August 20, 2002 10:18 AM Subject: Re: 1911 Census Steve: Thank you for contacting me regarding the release of the 1911 and subsequent censuses. Over the past four years, I have been working towards the release of the 1911 and subsequent census records. Although there has been considerable delay (as with everything under the Liberal government) we expect to eventually have government-sponsored legislation which will actually come to a vote in the House of Commons. The two options being considered are amendments to allow the release of census records 92 years after their collection. However, under one proposal they would only be applied to future censuses, while the more favourable proposal (which I will be supporting) would be to make these changes retroactive. I encourage you to call Allan Rock, the Minister Responsible for Statistics Canada, with your support for retroactive changes so that an entire generation of census records will not be lost to genealogists such as yourself. It is also imperative that you inform as many others as possible in order to inundate the Minister with calls. It is only through involvement in the process that you will be able to achieve the results you desire. In the meantime, let me assure you that so that you, and all family historians, can continue your valuable work. Sincerely, Myron Thompson, M.P. Wild Rose, AB 05/13/99 e-mail from Myron Thompson, M.P. to Patricia Folkers:
13 May 1999 Thank you for your recent letter regarding the release of census records. I have had a great number of constituents contact my office regarding this issue over the past year. Since this matter was first brought to my attention, my staff has been working extremely hard on the issue, and has been in consultation with both the Alberta Family Histories Society, and the Alberta Genealogical Society. I am enclosing two pieces of correspondence which were the culmination of this work. The first is a letter from a member of my staff to the Minister Responsible for Statistics Canada, John Manley utlining the problem. The second is the Minister's response outlining the two solutions being considered. Prior to receiving this commitment, I had considered drafting a Private Members' Bill on this issue. however, given that government-sponsored legislation is on its way, I am optimistic that the situation could be clarified. Should the legislation provide for a retroactive amendment to the Statistics Act I will support it. However, should the proposed changes not be retroactive in nature I will, of course, be opposed. I trust that this addresses your concerns, and encourage you to write the Minister to voice your opinion on this issue. Thanks again for writing. Sincerely Myron Thompson, M.P. Wild Rose AB
A web site has been posted at http://globalgenealogy.com/census to record MP's responses, so that those who are interested, will know the position that their elected representative has (or has not expressed) on the issue. Also included on the web site, is a correspondence log for each Member of Parliament, which will contain responses to this e-mail plus any other correspondence from the MP. The Question: "Would you, as an elected Member of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Canada, vote FOR or AGAINST a Bill supporting release to the Public, of Post 1901 Census Records, 92 years after they were recorded. ( 1911 census information available in 2003, 1921 in 2013 etc)" If you would like to expand on your position, your entire response will be posted to your individual correspondence log. The Post 1901 Census web site is sponsored by Global Genealogy & History Bookstore. A vast number of e-mails and calls from subscribers and web site visitors, clearly demonstrates that this issue is extremely important to them. Many readers have expressed that their current MP's position on this issue will weigh heavily in their decision process during the next election. |
