04/18/2001 - email from MP Greg Thompson to Muriel M. Davidson. From: "Thompson, Greg - M.P." To: "'Muriel M. Davidson'" Sent: Wednesday, April 18, 2001 2:18 PM Subject: RE: Just checking on the GOLD Members of Parliament You can count on it. -------Original Message---------- From: Muriel M. Davidson To: Greg Thompson, MP Sent: Monday, April 16, 2001 7:09 PM Subject: Just checking on the GOLD Members of Parliament Dear Mr. Greg Thompson:- I have checked your personal correspondence message centre at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Score5.htm The last date is back in 2000, prior to the election of Nov. 27. Since that time Senator Lorna Milne and Mr. Murray Calder, MP have been busy with their Private Member's Bills, identical wording, having passed the Second Reading and First Reading respectively. Murray's web page is http://www.murraycaldermp.com/ Your GOLD tick is shining brightly -- looking forward to continued support! Muriel M. Davidson Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Brampton, Ontario 06/16/2000 - email from Gordon A. WATTS to MP Greg Thompson.
Thank you for your prompt, positive response to my email of 15 June 2000, and your statement that you would "have no problem voting for any of the Private Member's Bills or Senate Bills concerning the census issue." It is much appreciated. I will be changing your "Fence" on the MP Scoreboard to a "Gold Tick" While I am aware that Murray Calder's Bill C-484 must yet be picked in the draw to be eligible for debate in the House, I would advise that Jason Kenney's Motion M-160 was deemed votable and has received two of the three allotted hours of debate in the House. The third hour of debate was scheduled for last week but was unfortunately bumped because of the extended debate on Bill C-11 - the dissolution of Devco. As things stand now, M-160 will likely not receive it's third hour of debate until the fall. Thank you once again for your support in this matter. Gordon A. WATTS gordon_watts@telus.net
To: 'Gordon A. WATTS' Sent: Friday, 16 June, 2000 8:54 AM Subject: RE: How will you vote? Dear Gordon As I have already stated to Muriel Davidson who is a friend of mine, I would have no problem voting for any of the Private Member's Bills or Senate Bills concerning the census issue. I understand that Mr. Kenny's Motion and Mr. Calder's Bill have been introduced in the House and have not been picked in the draw and so we have no way of knowing when or if they will become law. Senator Milne's Bill is at second reading we know it will go to committee and have third reading, but have no way of knowing if it will then be moved to the House of Commons or not or even if it will be voted on. Because this process seems to be taking so long I have been in contact on a regular basis with Minister Manley, the Chief Statistician Mr. Fellegi and the Parliamentary Liaison to Stats Can Joanne Beckstead. I am told that the Panel Mr. Manley commissioned to look at this issue will hand its report to the Minister the end of June, the Minister will instruct his departmental officials to look at the report and its recommendations over the summer and in the fall the Minister will address the issue. I am hopeful that this time frame will be kept and that a positive solution will be arrived at. Greg Thompson, M.P.
Muriel ------------- Hello, I have received a reply from my MP,Greg Thompson,New Brunswick Southwest.- "Thank you for your letter concerning access to post-1901 Census Returns held by Statistics Canada. I had a number of people contact me on this issue and because of this I made representations to the Minister of Industry. Please find enclosed the response from the Chief Statistician of Canada. If after reviewing this response you have any further questions or require more information, please do not hesitate to contact me." Mr Thompson had been in touch with John Manley and Sheila Copps back in November of 1998 on this subject, I'm not going to bother typing out the letter that Mr Manley sent to Mr Thompson as it's the same pat response you've already seen. I mailed letters to Mr Thompson, Mr Manley, and Ms Copps at the same time, this is my first reply.
A web site has been posted at http://globalgenealogy.com/census to record MP's responses, so that those who are interested, will know the position that their elected representative has (or has not expressed) on the issue. Also included on the web site, is a correspondence log for each Member of Parliament, which will contain responses to this e-mail plus any other correspondence from the MP. The Question: "Would you, as an elected Member of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Canada, vote FOR or AGAINST a Bill supporting release to the Public, of Post 1901 Census Records, 92 years after they were recorded. ( 1911 census information available in 2003, 1921 in 2013 etc)" If you would like to expand on your position, your entire response will be posted to your individual correspondence log. The Post 1901 Census web site is sponsored by Global Genealogy & History Bookstore. A vast number of e-mails and calls from subscribers and web site visitors, clearly demonstrates that this issue is extremely important to them. Many readers have expressed that their current MP's position on this issue will weigh heavily in their decision process during the next election. |
