03/07/2001 - email from MP Darrel Stinson to Doris Wegwitz.
    7 March 2001

    Doris Wegwitz

Thank you for your email regarding the post 1901 census reports. Actually, this has been an issue with government since 1998 when petitions were presented asking for a change to the way Statistics Canada archived the records.

Presently the Senate has before it a Bill (S-12) giving access to the records for 92 years after the census was taken. I have gone on record as supporting the retention for public use of all census information up to and including 1901 and onward. These records are invaluable to genealogists and family members who are trying to research their heritage. I believe that they should have these archives at their disposal.

In answer to your question if I would support a bill to this effect, the answer is yes.. I wish you every success in your endeavours.

    Darrel Stinson, MP

02/12/2001 - letter from MP Darrel Stinson to Muriel M. Davidson.
    Ottawa: February 12, 2001
    Ms. Muriel Davidson
    Brampton, ON

    Dear Ms. Muriel Davidson:

I would like to thank you for your letter concerning the very important issue of the Post 1906 Census Release. You can be sure that I am still in favour of the release of the census information just as I was before the election.

Many people feel that their views and opinions go unnoticed, but that is not the case. I believe that the only way for the federal government to know what issues are most important to Canadians is for constituents, such as you, to contact their Member of Parliament to let them know how they feel.

I appreciate you taking the time to write. Should you have any future concerns, please feel free to contact me.

    Best wishes,

    Darrel Stinson, MP

08/13/99- e-mail from Elaine Parker assistant to M.P. Darrel Stinson to Grodon Watts:
    Hello,

My MP and boss, Darrel Stinson, says he would vote FOR a Bill supporting the release of the post 1901 Census records as per your question. How does one have that posted to your MP page?

Thanks for your help in this. Also, a personal "thank you" for your work on this petition. I am in need of later Census records myself for tracing my family tree.

    Sincerely,

    Elaine Parker, CA

04/30/99- e-mail from The Global Gazette to MP
This e-mail has been transmitted to all Members of Parliament to ask for individual responses to a specific question regarding how you would vote if a Bill to reverse earlier legislation depriving Canadians of the important heritage information contained in census records after 1901, was tabled.

A web site has been posted at http://globalgenealogy.com/census to record MP's responses, so that those who are interested, will know the position that their elected representative has (or has not expressed) on the issue. Also included on the web site, is a correspondence log for each Member of Parliament, which will contain responses to this e-mail plus any other correspondence from the MP.

    The Question:

"Would you, as an elected Member of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Canada, vote FOR or AGAINST a Bill supporting release to the Public, of Post 1901 Census Records, 92 years after they were recorded. ( 1911 census information available in 2003, 1921 in 2013 etc)"

If you would like to expand on your position, your entire response will be posted to your individual correspondence log.

The Post 1901 Census web site is sponsored by Global Genealogy & History Bookstore. A vast number of e-mails and calls from subscribers and web site visitors, clearly demonstrates that this issue is extremely important to them. Many readers have expressed that their current MP's position on this issue will weigh heavily in their decision process during the next election.
