07/24/2000 - email from MP Gerry Ritz to Beverly Gutenburg.
To: Beverly Gutenburg Sent: Monday, July 24, 2000 8:00 AM Subject: release of census Dear Beverley, I have not, nor will I ever be a "fence-sitter"! You have to realize that we recieve all sorts of requests for polls and surveys in our Ottawa office and we don't make it a practice responding to every one. I have noted the passion that this issue has stirred among many people in Saskatchewan and I assure you I have no problem supporting the release of century-old information on our ancestors. I have a feeling they wouldn't mind either, as I'm sure the reason they wanted anonymity back then was because they didn't want government authorities interfering in their lives. Different world today, I guess! I am aware my colleague Jason Kenney has a private member's motion M-160 to suggest the government pass the post-1901 census on to the National Archives and I am in favour of this. There is also an MP and a Senator's bill along the same lines and I'm willing to vote in favour of these if they accomplish the task and are not weighed down with any side issues. Sincerely, Gerry Ritz, MP Battlefords--Lloydminster
I would like to inform you that Mr. Gerry Ritz MP (Battlefords-Lloydminster, SK) is in favour of releasing census information to the National Archives and will vote accordingly in upcoming debates. It will be of assistance to his constituents if any future correspondence reflects this, including the 'scorecard' listed below. Thank you for attention to this matter and good luck with your efforts. James Scott, Legislative Assistant
A web site has been posted at http://globalgenealogy.com/census to record MP's responses, so that those who are interested, will know the position that their elected representative has (or has not expressed) on the issue. Also included on the web site, is a correspondence log for each Member of Parliament, which will contain responses to this e-mail plus any other correspondence from the MP. The Question: "Would you, as an elected Member of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Canada, vote FOR or AGAINST a Bill supporting release to the Public, of Post 1901 Census Records, 92 years after they were recorded. ( 1911 census information available in 2003, 1921 in 2013 etc)" If you would like to expand on your position, your entire response will be posted to your individual correspondence log. The Post 1901 Census web site is sponsored by Global Genealogy & History Bookstore. A vast number of e-mails and calls from subscribers and web site visitors, clearly demonstrates that this issue is extremely important to them. Many readers have expressed that their current MP's position on this issue will weigh heavily in their decision process during the next election. |
