To: Hinton.B@parl.gc.ca Date: Wednesday, August 01, 2001 1:54 AM Subject: Re: OUR Census standings Dear Mrs. Hinton, Please forgive my taking of your valuable time. My query is regarding holding back of census information.I have recently, FINALLY, met some cousins on my mother's paternal side, this summer in our beautiful city of Kamloops. They were visiting from the north coast area (Terrace). Now at 49 years of age, I have finally found some family. Did you know that my great-grandfather arrived on the north coast in 1893?? My paternal grandfather was the first white child born (1908) in the Kitsumkalum valley? A silver cup was engraved and presented by the Reverend Marsh at his christening and is on display at the museum (of which as the oldest direct descendant now living, I have requested that it remain there in Terrace). My paternal great grandmother is originally from Norway, and her father was commissioned by England to build certain boats/ships and to train others on how to build the same. He emigrated to Canada and had his own business at Port Essington (now almost distinct) and at Seal Cove near Prince Rupert. I'm very proud of the this family, now that I have found them!!!Now to the maternal side, I now have discovered my great-grandmother's name, which was extremely exciting, and oral history says that her sister watched Louis Riel pass the downstairs parlour floor the night before the rebellion!!!, but, alas, my greatgrandfather is a name and I'm still using our local libraries and any other source of information that I can obtain, this has taken me several years to even find out his name!!! I have been constantly studying the postings regarding the census. I now myself have children that have children and as I am the oldest sibling, have been struggling with 'message boards' on the internet, not getting anywhere! Hopefully, with the census being readily available, I can try and figure out how my great grandfather came from Michigan, then somehow to Canada (my grandmother was born in Webb, Saskatchewan) and I'm still trying to find the information on where her siblings were born!!! I know that my greatgrandfather's death certificate was registered as/in Burns Lake in 1932 and his Naturalization Certificate shows his residence as Francois Lake, but that's all I know. Now my own father, of whom I had not seen since I was 3 months old, has passed away years ago.......I can not find any information on him, searching on the net via BC Gov site, gets me absolutely nowhere............. So, please, fight the census sealing, there are more people than me out in this world that have the same aggravations and are trying SO desperately to find their roots and their relatives!!!! Family is very important!! I try very hard to believe that the elected representatives (elected by us, the taxpayers) are there for us.......but, when I see that they can also close off necessary information that we the taxpayers and legal residents of Canada are part and parcel off......I have a hard time to respect and believe in many persons, that govern our FREE country. Thank you, both for your patience and hopefully understanding in my email...Thank heavens England doesn't have the same hangups....we've traced my husband's maternal side including certificates and so on back to the 1600's and it's wonderful!!! The history alone is more than we've ever learned as students in this province... Julie 05/14/2001 - email from Office of MP Betty Hinton to Gordon A. Thank you! Elaine Parker Research Assistant for Betty Hinton, MP Kamloops, Thompson & Highland Valleys 04/05/2001 - email to MP Betty Hinton from Pat Watson. Dear Ms.Hinton... Recently I have written you a letter concerning the POST 1901 CENSUS PROJECT. I have not heard from your office as yet. Being new to this job and following you in the Kamloops Daily News I realize you have adjustments to make and this is a very busy time for you. I urge you, Ms.Hinton, to take a moment to see how the other (MP'S are looking at this situation). You have a big blue question mark beside your name. Can we genealogists change this blue mark to a GOLD check mark Ms.Hinton. Here is theURL below. Won't you please take one moment to look at it. I will be checking everyday to see if you have turned to GOLD...... With my sincere thanks Respectfully One of your voters in Kamloops B.C. Pat Watson> Kamloops B.C. 11/27/2000 - Ms. Betty Hinton was elected to the House of Commons 27 November 2000. |
