To: 'Garth Staples' Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2001 5:48 PM Subject: RE: CENSUS WITHELD Dear Mr. Staples: I appreciate hearing your concerns regarding Bill S-12, and do agree that these records would be an irreplaceable source of information for medical researchers, statisticians, or those with an interest in genealogy. Rest assured that I fully support Bill S-12, and will not hesitate to vote in favour of it in the House of Commons when the time comes. Thank you for writing and sharing your thoughts regarding this issue, and please do not hesitate to contact me at any point in the future. Yours Truly, Shawn Murphy MPHillsborough, PE 05/06/2001 - email from Garth Staples to Muriel M. Davidson re: MP Shawn Murphy. While Garth is optimistic about support from Mr. Murphy, we await a definitve statement before awarding him a gold tick. From: Garth Staples [mailto:garth.staples@pei.sympatico.ca] Sent: Sunday, May 06, 2001 2:39 AM To: Muriel M. Davidson Subject: Murphy MP Hello I had talked to Shawn Murphy in his Charlottetown office and he said and I quote: "Calder's bill should have a good chance of passing". He further said that he had no reason not to support it. Now he may not want to put that in writing for various reasons at this time. So in my books he will vote for it but I know you want that in writing from him so will keep 'at him'. Glad Easter wrote to you . He is my MP and I kept the pressure on. Cheers Garth Staples A native of Staples Brook, NOVA SCOTIA! 03/13/2001 - email from MP Shawn Murphy to Linda Squires Vaillancourt and Jane Mosher Page. From: "Murphy, Shawn - M.P." From: Jane Mosher Page Sent: March 12, 2001 3:30 PM To: Murphy.S@parl.gc.ca Subject: re:census Hello, We are writing to ask for your YES vote to allow census records to be made available. One group in particular needs to have this information: British Home Children. This is the name used to describe children who were taken from England starting in the mid 1800's until the mid 1900's. These children often lost complete contact with their families. British Home Children and their descendants need the census information to trace their family histories and medical histories. Please, vote Yes to allow open access to census records. Thank you for your attention. Linda Squires Vaillancourt Jane Mosher Page 03/08/2001 - email to MP Shawn Murphy from Ted Picard.
To: Shawn Murphy, MP Sent: Thursday, March 8, 2001 11:40 AM Subject: census Dear Sir: It has been estimated that there are some 7.5 million plus Canadians involved in Genealogical research. These citizens, in their quest for their past, for their Canadian heritage, depend heavily upon the information provided in Census reports. Under current legislation, post 1901 Census reports will not be released to the Public after 92 years, as have been Census reports up to and including 1901. In the past two years, many of those 7.5 million plus voters, including myself, have sent numerous letters and email to their local Members of Parliament, Government Ministers, and Senators expressing their dismay with, and opposition to, this legislation. They have requested the legislation be amended to allow release to the Public of Census records after 92 years, starting with the 1911 Census. I write to you to ask the following question: Would you, as a Member of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Canada, having been placed in that position by the voting citizens of your Constituency, vote FOR or AGAINST a Bill supporting release to the Public of Post 1901 Census Records after 92 years, starting with the 1906 Census? I await your answer to this question at your earliest convenience. Thank you. Sincerely yours Ted Picard Summerside PEI 11/27/2000 - Mr. Shawn Murphy was elected to the House of Commons 27 November 2000. |
