11/15/2001 - email to MP Richard Harris from Gordon Blanchard.
To: Harris.R@parl.gc.ca Sent: Thursday, November 15, 2001 9:49 PM Subject: Bill C-312 Dear Mr. Harris: I am writing to ask for your support in making Bill C-312 votable. I am doing my family history and make tremendous use of the U.S. Census information. I would also like to be able to use the Canada Census information to aid in my research for the members of my family that lived in Canada since the 1800's. Thanks for your consideration. Gordon Blanchard, Alberta. 04/17/2001 - email to MP Richard Harris from Muriel M. Davidson. From: "Muriel M. Davidson" To: Richard Harris, MP Sent: Tuesday, April 17, 2001 12:48 PM Subject: Just checking on our GOLD Members of Parliament Dear Mr. Richard Harris:- I have checked your personal correspondence message centre at http://www.globalgenealogy.com/Census/Score1.htm#BC The last date is back in 2000, prior to the election of Nov. 27. Since that time Senator Lorna Milne and Mr. Murray Calder, MP have been busy with their Private Member's Bills, identical wording, having passed the Second Reading and First Reading respectively. Murray's web page is http://www.murraycaldermp.com/ Your GOLD tick is shining brightly -- looking forward to continued support! Muriel M. Davidson Co-Chair, Canada Census Committee Brampton, Ontario 09/27/2000 - email from office of MP Richard Harris to Muriel M. Davidson. Note the date shown. Obviously an error as Motion M-160 was voted on 26 September 2000 and the email was received 27 September 2000. The correct date, deduced from the wording of the message would be 27 September 2000.
Date: Saturday, 28 october, 2000 10:35 AM To: Muriel M. Davidson Subject: Re: A Reminder -- Hoping for a YES Answer Yes, but was voted on last night.

Dear Ernie, Thank you for your E-Mail concerning census records. I have received a great deal of correspondence on this important matter since the early spring. At that time, I took the liberty of contacting Marion Smith of Statistics Canada, Pacific Region Advisory Services, to receive an explanation for this matter. Ms. Smith informed me that no census records are or will be destroyed. However, the release of census information taken in the years following 1901 is prohibited by law for reasons of privacey and confidentiality. As such, only the person named in individual census records may access their information, such as to confirm birth dates for pension purposes. If you would like to receive a copy of Ms. Smith's response, which includes a more detailed explanation as to the rationale for prohibiting access to census records, please E-mail me back with your mailing address or fax number. In the meantime, thank you for your E-mail, and I hope you will find this explanation satisfactory. Regards, Dick
STATS CAN & THE 1901 CENSUS It has come to my attention that Statistics Canada has refused to tranfer all post 1901 census records to National Archives because of their contention that it violates a secrecy provision in their Act. This must be rectified. As a citizen of Canada who regards family history as an essential part of our heritage, I urge you to press for a change in the legislation which will require Statistics Canada to deposit ALL census records with the National Archives. This must include the 1906 and 1911 census and each census taken since that date. I understand that information from the census is made available for commerce purposes so why not for heritage and genealogical purposes? A POSITIVE response to this e-mail would be appreciated. Ernie Myers A concerned consituent.
A web site has been posted at http://globalgenealogy.com/census to record MP's responses, so that those who are interested, will know the position that their elected representative has (or has not expressed) on the issue. Also included on the web site, is a correspondence log for each Member of Parliament, which will contain responses to this e-mail plus any other correspondence from the MP. The Question: "Would you, as an elected Member of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Canada, vote FOR or AGAINST a Bill supporting release to the Public, of Post 1901 Census Records, 92 years after they were recorded. ( 1911 census information available in 2003, 1921 in 2013 etc)" If you would like to expand on your position, your entire response will be posted to your individual correspondence log. The Post 1901 Census web site is sponsored by Global Genealogy & History Bookstore. A vast number of e-mails and calls from subscribers and web site visitors, clearly demonstrates that this issue is extremely important to them. Many readers have expressed that their current MP's position on this issue will weigh heavily in their decision process during the next election. |
