10/21/2002 - letter from MP James Lunney to Phil Riley.
    OTTAWA
    Oct 21, 2002

    Dear Mr. Riley:

Thank you for your recent email regarding the 1901 Census records. The topic has generated much correspondence from Canadian citizens in support of a release of this information.

You are correct in stating that legislation will be introduced to allow for the release of the records for historical and genealogical reasons.

A draft of the legislation should be available when the new Bill is introduced in the House of Commons some time in the fall.

Given the interest the public has shown in the release of the Census records, I expect there will be extensive media coverage at the time of introduction of the new Bill.

    Sincerely,

    James Lunney, M.P.
    Nanaimo-Alberni

    Hi Gordon.

Thanks for posting on the BC Mailing list to keep us informed on this important issue. I wanted to let "someone" know that I got a nice letter from my MP, James LUNNEY (Alliance - Nanaimo/Parksville) who is very supportive of the effort to keep the post 1901 Census available for public viewing, etc.

    Regards

    Doug Eastman

Your comments and concerns direct to Dr. Lunney are gratefully acknowledged.

Your further e-mail request for a "yes or no" answer from Dr. James Lunney, MP re 1911 Census refers. At the present time, Dr. Lunney feels that a few more years is not too long to wait for Canadaians interested in changes to legislation on this matter: however, he is willing to canvass constituents in this riding to determine how they feel about this matter and will be doing so in his next 10%-er survey that will be going out to the public.

05/19/2001 - email from MP James Lunney to P. Dennice Goudie.

    Attn: P. Dennice Goudie

Receipt of your e-mail with enquiries regarding 1911 Census is acknowledged.

We are advised that the reason Census information is not being made available to the public is because when the 1906 Census was taken, the laws were written to protect the privacy of Canadians. In order to release this information early, consent would need to be received from each person who is still alive and who took part in the Census or was included in the Census form.

    Linda Hammond
    Constituency Assistant for
    Dr. James Lunney, MP
    Nanaimo-Alberni

11/27/2000 - Mr. James Lunney was elected to the House of Commons 27 November 20000.
