10/27/2001 - email re: MP Geoff Regan from Wally Buchanan to Muriel M. Davidson.
Muriel: I took it upon myself to e-mail the non-committed Nova Scotia MP's and a few others from this list soliciting their support for release of the 1911 Census information. So, far I have only received one reply which I list below: Dear Mr. Buchanan: I wish to confirm what I have indicated previously to my constituents, that I do favour the release of the information from historical Census data. While I am open to arguments about what the length of time should be before Census data is opened to researchers, it is not my view that this information should never be released. Geoff Regan, M.P., Halifax West. 10/27/2001 - email from MP Geoff Regan to Gwen Christie. This message earns Mr. Regan his gold tick.
To: Gwen Christie Sent: Thursday, October 25, 2001 5:01 AM Subject: FW: Release of Post 1901 census Dear Ms. Christie: I wish to confirm what I have indicated previously to other constituents, that I do favour the release of the information from historical Census data. While I am open to arguments about what the length of time should be before Census data is opened to researchers, it is not my view that this information should never be released. I am sorry that you have not received a reply sooner. Yours truly, Geoff Regan 04/06/2001 - email from Gwen Christie to Gordon Watts and Muriel Davidson. On the basis of this message, I might have given Mr. Regan his gold tick of support, however, without specific confirmation from him he sits on the fence. Hopefully he will confirm his position in the near future. Hi Gordon and Muriel: This a.m. our M.P., Geoff Regan's, Newletter No. 3 arrived in our mailbox. After having emailed him prior to and following the election last fall with no response I phoned his constitutency office in Bedford, and left a long message on his answering machine. This afternoon he called me from Ottawa! I was able to give him a fair picture of what has transpired in the past. One high point I stressed was the Expert Panel and how John Manley treated its results, but, Gordon, I apologize - I forgot to mention the recent meeting you attended. He says he intends to investigate the Government's position and, like us, if my version of events is correct, he cannot understand the Government's reluctance to pass/change this legislation without continual investigations. He says he has already written to Brian Tobin, but in the meantime, I will send him any URLs we have so he can check out the status of each MP in Canada. It certainly sounded like he might consider making a commitment to support us. I promised him we would keep after him if we don't get a satisfactory answer of some sort in future. 11/27/2000 - Mr. Geoff Regan was elected to the House of Commons 27 November 2000. |
