To: Gordon A. Watts Sent: Thursday, December 13, 2001 1:18 PM Subject: Release of Census data Please accept my belated thanks for your recent e-mail requesting support for Murray Calder's Private Member's Bill C-312, that would allow the public release of post-1901 census records after a 92-year waiting period. I am very familiar with the issue and completely agree with the need to release this census data. As you may know, in February 2001, I was pleased to introduce a Private Members' Motion requesting that the access to records be given to genealogists and other researchers 92 years after the census. It reads as follows: 37th Parliament, 1st Session EDITED HANSARD * NUMBER 007 CONTENTS Tuesday, February 6, 2001 M-238 - February 6, 2001 - Mrs. Gallant (Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke) - On or after Tuesday, February 20, 2001 - That, in the opinion of this House, the government should allow the transfer of all census records from Statistics Canada to the National Archives of Canada for permanent safekeeping, and access to records should be given to genealogists and other researchers 92 years after the census, subject to a privacy right that allows individuals to object to the disclosure of personal information in the census records. Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me, and you may rest assured that I will continue to support this issue in the House of Commons. To: Gallant.C@parl.gc.ca Sent: Thursday, November 15, 2001 9:49 PM Subject: Bill C-312 Dear Ms. Gallant: I am writing to ask for your support in making Bill C-312 votable. I am doing my family history and make tremendous use of the U.S. Census information. I would also like to be able to use the Canada Census information to aid in my research for the members of my family that lived in Canada since the 1800's. Thanks for your consideration. Gordon Blanchard, Alberta. 08/01/2001 - email from MP Cheryl Gallant to Muriel M. Davidson.
Dear Muriel, Many thanks for contacting my office regarding my Private Members' Motion on the need to release historical census data. I regret the delay in replying to you. In an effort to facilitate this, I introduced a Private Members' Motion on February 6, requesting that access to records be given to genealogists and other researchers 92 years after the census. A copy of my Motion is enclosed for your consideration. Again, thank you for your e-mail, and you may rest assured that I will continue to support this matter in the House of Commons. With kindest personal regards, Cheryl 37th Parliament, 1st Session Edited Hansard * Number 007 Tuesday, February 6, 2001 M-238 - February 6, 2001 - Mrs. Gallant (Renfrew--Nipissing--Pembroke) - On or after Tuesday, February 20, 2001 - That, in the opinion of this House, the government should allow the transfer of all census records from Statistics Canada to the National Archives of Canada for permanent safekeeping, and access to records should be given to genealogists and other researchers 92 years after the census, subject to a privacy right that allows individuals to object to the disclosure of personal information in the census records. 03/12/2001 - email from MP Cheryl Gallant to Brenda Putzig.

Sent: March 12, 2001 3:21 PM To: Cheryl Gallant, MP Subject: re:census Hello, We are writing to ask for your YES vote to allow census records to be made available. One group in particular needs to have this information: British Home Children. This is the name used to describe children who were taken from England starting in the mid 1800's until the mid 1900's. These children often lost complete contact with their families. British Home Children and their descendants need the census information to trace their family histories and medical histories. Please, vote Yes to allow open access to census records. Thank you for your attention. Linda Squires Vaillancourt Jane Mosher Page 03/10/2001 -- email from Brenda Putzig to MP Cheryl Gallant.
