    Subject: Welcome Back to Ottawa

    To Mr. Dave Chatters, MP:-

When Private Member's Bills were presented prior to the election, you were in favour of Post-1906 Census release. As such, your symbol was the Gold tick mark on http://globalgenealogy.com/census/index6.htm

Will you, as an elected Member of Parliament, continue to SUPPORT any Private Member's Bills brought before Parliament to obtain census release and the automatic transfer to National Archives?

Senator Lorna Milne and Murray Calder, MP will be presenting identically worded Private Member's Bills - dates and numbers unknown, same as previous wording.

Your provincial residents should be behind you on this -- the 1906 census should have been released in 1998, the Expert Panel stated it should be immediately made available.

We suggest you read/download MEMORANDUM OF LAW by Lois Sparling, an Albertan barrister, which deals with the prairie provinces census problems http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Farm/7843/poll.html

Looking forward to receiving a positive reply from you,

    Muriel M. Davidson

25/06/99- e-mail from M.P. David Chatters to Mr. & Mrs. Brian Bishop:
    Dear Mr. & Mrs. Bishop,

Thank you for your email in which you express your dissatisfaction regarding the present system of releasing Census information.

In researching information to answer your questions, I discovered that the problem currently stems from conflicting legislation that consequently restricts the release of post 1901 Census reports. When I questioned the Minister's office what steps were being taken to amend this conflict, I received the following information:

At the request of the Honourable John Manley, Minister Responsible for Statistics Canada, Statistics Canada has developed options for amending the legislation to allow access to Census records. As it stands, there are two possibilities: the first option contemplates amending the Statistics Act to allow records, starting with the 2001 Census and carrying on from there, to be transferred to the National Archives of Canada to be subsequently made available to the public; the second option is to retroactively change the confidentiality provisions of the Statistics Act to allow the 1911 and all censuses taken thereafter to be eventually placed in the public domain.

However, I believe that the unavailability of post 1901 Census information is ridiculous. So, to answer your questions, I would be willing to present or support a Private Member's Bill which supports the release to the Public of Post 1901 Census Reports after 92 years, starting with the 1911 Census.

Good luck in your future efforts regarding this issue, and thank you for writing me with your concerns.

    Sincerely yours,

    David Chatters, M.P.
    Athabasca

07/08/99- e-mail from Thereasa Bell Parlimentary Assistant to M.P. David Chatters to Adam Brouwer (Global Genealogy):
    Dear Webmaster:

Could you please add to your website Mr. Chatters' position on the release of post 1901 census information.

Mr. Chatters' believes that the unavailability of post 1901 Census information is ridiculous, and would certainly support a bill which supports the release of post 1901 information after the required 92 years.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. If you have any questions, please call me at (xxx) xxx-xxxx.

    Sincerely yours,

    Theresa Bell

04/30/99- e-mail from The Global Gazette to MP
This e-mail has been transmitted to all Members of Parliament to ask for individual responses to a specific question regarding how you would vote if a Bill to reverse earlier legislation depriving Canadians of the important heritage information contained in census records after 1901, was tabled.

A web site has been posted at http://globalgenealogy.com/census to record MP's responses, so that those who are interested, will know the position that their elected representative has (or has not expressed) on the issue. Also included on the web site, is a correspondence log for each Member of Parliament, which will contain responses to this e-mail plus any other correspondence from the MP.

    The Question:

"Would you, as an elected Member of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Canada, vote FOR or AGAINST a Bill supporting release to the Public, of Post 1901 Census Records, 92 years after they were recorded. ( 1911 census information available in 2003, 1921 in 2013 etc)"

If you would like to expand on your position, your entire response will be posted to your individual correspondence log.

The Post 1901 Census web site is sponsored by Global Genealogy & History Bookstore. A vast number of e-mails and calls from subscribers and web site visitors, clearly demonstrates that this issue is extremely important to them. Many readers have expressed that their current MP's position on this issue will weigh heavily in their decision process during the next election.
